You may be familiar with the story of Baron John Maltravers, buried in the North aisle on St Mary’s Church Lytchett Matravers. He lived during a difficult and turbulent time in England. John was guardian to Edward II when Edward was murdered, and John was later implicated in the murder of another of Edward I’s sons – Edmund of Woodstock. After exile in France and a petition to King Edward III, John was finally pardoned and returned to England and eventually to Lytchett Matravers. He died in 1364 and now lies under a French Tournai Marble tombstone. Legend has it that he was laid in full armour, and now we have some recent evidence to connect with this legend.
